Submitted by our JAG student Ram V., we honor Earl Lloyd, a basketball pioneer who made history as the first African American to play in an NBA game in 1950. Lloydâs talent, perseverance, and leadership paved the way for generations of Black athletes in professional basketball. He later became a coach and mentor, leaving an enduring legacy in the sport.

She made history in 2002 as the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Monsterâs Ball. Beyond acting, Berry has excelled as a producer and entrepreneur, using her platform to advocate for diversity in Hollywood and support causes like domestic violence awareness and diabetes research.

Known for her powerful voice and grace under adversity, Anderson became the first African American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Her historic 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial, after being denied a performance at Constitution Hall due to segregation, remains a defining moment in the fight for racial equality in the arts.

Submitted by our JAG student Raphael C., we honor Francis Sumner, the first African American psychologist. Known as the "Father of Black Psychology," Sumner became the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in 1920. His groundbreaking work challenged racial biases in psychology and helped pave the way for future Black scholars in the field. His legacy continues to inspire those working to advance mental health and social justice.

A skilled Air Force pilot and Ph.D. holder in physical chemistry, Lawrence was selected for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program in 1967. Though he tragically passed away before going to space, his legacy paved the way for future Black astronauts like Guion Bluford and Mae Jemison.

Often called the âFather of African American Art,â Douglas was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance. His bold, distinctive style combined modern design with African heritage, creating powerful visuals that told stories of Black culture, history, and identity.

The St. Landry Parish Honor Band was held on Saturday, February 1, at the Opelousas Senior High School Auditorium. This special event showcased the top band students from every middle and high school in the parish, with an incredible guest performance by the Lawtell Recorder Group!
The event kicked off with a Friday evening rehearsal, leading to an outstanding public performance on Saturday, where each group displayed their talent and hard work.
